A Day Light Malfunction
By: Cory Cass
A man in dark shades opened the door for the two men sitting in the back seat. "If you guys can follow me we can meet with Dr. Moore and start the experiment."
Finley and Morris followed the man out of the car. Finley and Morris wouldn't look like they would be good friends, but their personalities connected in a way that they knew everything about each other. Finley, with a professor like look, was always the brain in college while Morris, with a bodyguard look, was always there to help Finley in any way he could. Finley and Morris followed the assistant up the stairs and through the labs like a mouse in a lab experiment. As they approached the elevators, they noticed a man waiting for them, "Hello Finley and Morris, I'm Dr. Moore, "as he shook their hands.
Both men noticed the glare he gave to them as if he had picked the wrong men for the job. Dr. Moore continued, "I want to be the first to thank you for signing up and being the first to experience hands on what could possibly be a big step in technology today."
"It's our pleasure," Morris said as Finley looked around with panic on his face, "Finley and I are very excited to be a part of this, and uhh, may I ask what we're a part of?"
Dr. Moore chuckled, "Of course, if you could follow me upstairs, I'll show you and we can finally get started."
Finley, Morris, Dr. Moore, and his assistant walked into the elevator, and it darted upwards. As they stood in silence, a gleam of light caught Finley's eyes. He turned to notice there was a window inside the elevator looking outside, and he could see himself rising away from the ground. He then looked past the hills and saw the sun beaming off the snow. While everyone started to get in their own conversations, Finley was off in his own world. He stood there and enjoyed the beauty of the mighty sunset.
He was interrupted when the doors flew open. They all stepped out, Dr. Moore first as the rest followed. "I have a bad feeling about this," Finley whispered to Morris.
"Everything will be fine Finley, now stop whining. These guys know what they are doing, there pros. Just imagine, this time tomorrow we'll be rich people."
"Alright Morris, I'll take your word for it, but..."
Dr. Moore cleared his throat, Finley and Morris stopped talking and looked down to see a giant machine before them. In the center was a glass box with a single door looking like an old telephone booth. It seemed like it could fit no more then two people. Connected to the glass box were wires that flowed to a giant cube about a few yards away from the glass box. Flashing lights and odd noises were coming from the cube. Finley and Morris stood there in shock, and Morris whispered to Finley, "We'll be just fine Finley, or I think we will."
"Men right before you is a machine which will be the turning point for all technology. A machine in which no man has been brave enough to build, in which you two will be the first to try it. Men right before your very eye is the first teleporter," Dr. Moore said with much excitement.
Both men stared at the machine, realizing what they were about to go through. Finley had to sit down for a moment while Morris talked to Dr. Morris, "Is this safe to go through?"
"Perfectly safe, we tested it on some mice the other day and they seemed to go through it fine."
Finley got up and walked towards Dr. Moore, "Well humans and mice are two different species! I got a bad feeling about this Dr. Moore, a really bad feeling."
"Once again, there is nothing to worry about. I am positive that you two will go in that machine and come back over there," as Dr. Moore pointed to a room with nothing in it, "Then you guys will get your money and be on your way back home."
Morris took Finley's arm and took him to the side, "This is getting pretty serious now."
"I can see that, you sure we want to go through this?"
"Of course I do, I'm just a little nervous now," as Morris saw Dr. Moore checking up on the machine with the other scientist, "It looks like they know what there doing."
"Alright, I'll take your word for it, but if anythingてカ"
"Alright boys, it's ready for you," Dr. Moore interrupted.
Both men walked up to the machine to give it a look around. Morris walked up to the glass door and took a look inside before walking in. Finley came walking beside him and said, "You know we've done a lot of stupid stuff in college, but this has to be the worst idea we've done for a while."
Morris laughed, "After you, Finley."
Both men walked into the machine, side by side. One of the scientists came and shut the door on them. Dr. Moore came over to the glass door and put a thumb up to the men. A speaker was in the box and it shouted out, "Alright guys, just a few more test and we'll let you go."
A few minutes went by and Finley and Morris were still standing in the glass box. Dr. Moore was at the computer looking at some data the scientists gave him earlier before. One of his men came over to him and said something to him. Finley noticed it and told Morris, and the two men both stared at them in fear. Dr. Moore looked up at Finley then back to the scientist and yelled something that Finley couldn't understand. The scientist ran off and red lights began to flash throughout the lab. Finley and Morris started to panic and tried opening the glass door, but it was locked. They looked up at Dr. Moore and saw him rushing towards the machine, but it was too late. Dr. Moore looked back to the glass door and saw smoke all around the area Finley and Morris were once standing at. Once the smoke cleared up, Dr. Moore looked up and saw that Finley and Morris were gone.
"Hey you guys alright?"
Finley opened his eyes and jumped up when he realized there was a group of about ten people around Morris and him. He asked them, "Where are we?"
One of the unknown men answered, "We're in Belgium right now on our way to Germany ."
Finley looked over and saw two men with medic signs on their shoulders picking up Morris and putting him up against the tree. They started checking if he was alright. Finley looked around and started to notice the other men. He saw that everyone was wearing helmets and carrying guns with them. They all looked like they haven't bathed for a while, and some even had some bandages filled with blood wrapped around their arms. Finley turned to the man that woke him up and asked, "What are you guys doing, there hasn't been a war since 2027."
Finley looked at him strangely.
"Apparently these people are American soldiers. Finley, the year is 1943, we went back in time."
"What!"
"We're in the middle of a huge world war."
"They said everything would be alright!"
"I told them our story of the future, they don't understand like we don't understand there story."
"If I ever see that Dr. Moore againてカ"
"They say we're close to enemy territory, so they want us to stay close to their group."
"They told us it was a teleporter!"
"Are you even listening to me?"
One of the soldiers came up, "Were heading north to headquarters now, we need you two to stick close to us."
Without arguing, Finley and Morris listened as they all started to head north. Finley and Morris could hear gun fire in the distant. Finley ran up to one of the soldiers and started to ask him questions, "So this is really 1943?"
The soldier responded, "Yup."
"This really is a big war?"
"There calling this one the Second World War. Now can I ask you something? I am the only one here that believes your story. I want to hear what the future is like. How much things have changed. What the world is like."
Finley thought to himself what he would say to the questioning soldier. He looked around and noticed that everything has changed. He turned to the soldier, "For starts, there hasn't been a war like this since 2027."
"You mean a world with peace?"
"Yup"
"What about the technology? Has it changed?"
"Technology is much more advance then what you are experiencing. People of the future have solved many of the world's need like world hunger," then Finley sarcastically said to himself, "and apparently they invented time machines too."
"That sounds like a much better place. Here we keep on fighting, day and night, with no rest. The world seems to just keep getting more and more complicated as the years go by"
Finley didn't say anything.
Finley turned around to find Morris talking to other soldiers telling stories of the future. Finley could see the surprise looks of the soldiers as Morris continued with his story. He then looked the other way to find a beautiful view of the landscape of the unknown area he was in. The beams of the sunset glazed in his eyes. He then realized that he was living in a whole new world. Something he would imagine never to be in. A world thatてカ
"Get down now!"
There was an explosion not too far from where Morris was standing. Morris fell to the ground and started to panic. Finley saw some people in the forest near them setting up a machine gun. He turned to his right to notice a trench where the American soldiers were running into. Morris was slow at getting up. Morris saw that the two men he was walking with were now gone. He tried to drag himself to safely behind the nearby tree. He tried to get up, but was stopped when he heard the intense fire of the machine gun. Finley ducked for cover inside the trench. Morris kept dragging himself until he got behind the tree. Finley peered up and saw dead bodies all over the field. He then scanned the area looking for Morris. He saw Morris behind the tree and noticed he was too scared to move. Finley edged along the trenches trying to make his was towards Morris. He heard an explosion that sounded not to far from he was he just standing. He kept moving till he reached Morris. Morris noticed him and yelled, "What's going on?"
"We're getting attacked by the enemy."
Finley got out of the trench and sat next to Morris. They sat there in silent. The battle was still raging on behind them. Morris looked up then nudged Finley in the shoulder. Finley looked up and noticed a glow coming a few yards away from the battle. The glow finally disappeared and a man appeared where the glow once was. Morris squinted to see who it was. His face lit up, "It's Dr. Moore!"
Morris got up and rushed towards him. He turned to see that Finley was running not to far from him. When Morris reached Dr. Moore, Dr. Moore was the first to say something, "Quick we need to go," as he pushed some buttons on the device on his wrist.
Morris turned around to hopefully see Finley standing behind him, but he wasn't there. He glanced around the field and noticed Finley lying there with his hand deep into his chest. He also saw his hand was covered in blood. Morris saw that Finley was shot.
"Quick, we need to getてカ"
"No, we have to go now," as Dr. Moore grabbed Morris' shoulder and in the blink of an eye they were back in the lab.
"We got to go back and get Finley," demanded Morris.
"We can't, we used the rest of the energy to come back to our time."
Morris slammed his fist down on the nearest table, "you told us it was a teleporter!"
Dr. Moore backed up a little, "Iてカit was suppose to be. We found a glitch somewhere in theてカ"
"I don't want to hear it, unless you can tell me we can save Finley," as Morris slammed his fist into the table again.
Dr. Moore had a blank stare in his face, "IてカI can't, I'm sorry."
Morris then turned around and left the lab.
Three days went by, and Morris was still trying to find out more about WWII. For hours, Morris would sit at his computer trying to look up information, but everything was blocked from the internet. Morris had enough of this. He got up in rage, threw his coat on, and slammed the door as he left.
He walked around looking for an answer to bring Finley back. He even wished he shared Finley's fate. He thought he should have been the one to be left behind. Finley had so much more to live for then Morris. He continued to walk around aimlessly until he did not know where he was at. He looked around at his settings and found he was in an area that he'd never been in before. He looked aimlessly around to try to give him ideas of where he might be at. He looked up and saw a dark building before him. He walked in and looked around. All he saw around him were countless shelves filled with many heavily used books. He looked through the books and saw many interesting things. Hitler's Rise to Power, Presidents of the United States , and The Last War to Occur. He kept looking through the books until he saw what would answer all of his questions. He picked up the timeline of WWII. He stared at the cover. He saw the picture of American soldiers, much like the ones he saw, setting up a machine gun. Looking at the cover just made him think about what Finley might be going through. Flipping through the book reminded him everything they had to go through. He saw pictures that made him feel sick. He thought about the people during that time era and what they had to go through. He kept flipping through the book until he noticed a picture of Finley and him walking with the soldiers they met that day. A tear started to drip from Morris' eye. He read the caption, "June 1943: American soldiers strangely find two men that appeared from nowhere and say they came from the future. While one man was found shot at a nearby battle, the other man has mysteriously disappeared."
He continued to stare at the picture for a while. As he was sitting there, a gleam of light caught Morris' eye. He closed the book and stood up to see what was out the window. He looked past the hills and saw the sun beaming off the snow. He looked at the cover of the book and back up at the window. He stood there and watched as the sun turned off its final light.
